Default 1980's Electronics

These past 12 months I've been servicing my collection of 1980's car radio cassette players and car shelf speakers, also my collection of 80's Boombox/Ghetto blasters... Yes I know, I'm sure I have one of those strange personality disorders.

I've had this obsession about the 80's Dixon and Currys brands Saisho and Matsui ever since I was a kid, it all started when I bought my father a Matsui car stereo for his MK3 Cortina back in 1985, there was something about the 80's Japanese electronic styling that got me excited, it still excites me even today. Lol

This obviously lead me onto the car brands Audioline, PYE, Goodmans and Sharp, and at the same time I was delving into Hifi's and Boomboxes, keyboards, drum machines and synthesizers, my bedroom as a kid looked like a cheap music store. Pic below...

I didn't realise it until recently that there is a huge 80's boombox following with collectors across the world, and I thought I was the only sad old G.I.T, it wasn't until I googled it and then went on Youtube.

Back in the 80's I use to spend hours in my local Currys and Dixons store just gazing at all the electronics, I would then come home and sketch them and add in my own style, you could say I was a right nerd.

The 80's styling certainly defined a decade where stylish sharp lines and bright colour text and graphics took centre stage. This has lead me to service my old 80's Boomboxes and and display them with authentic Dixons and Currys price signage/shelf talkers. The prices are correct as they were back in the 1980's, a bit of google searching helped me with that one. This is my little bit of happiness that puts a big smile upon my face, I've also just found my old Walkmans which are still boxed, so these will also be going on display.

A little taster...

The 1980's car shelf speakers, the ones you would see in the back of Capri's and Escorts, before the 6x9 boys hacked up their rear parcel shelves and door-cards.

I remember, back in the 80s, I installed some Audioline coaxial speakers in the front doors together with rear speakers on the rear parcel shelf.

Kev next door, who we had a good banter type friendship, was quite envious of the set-up.
So, to outdo me, he arrived home one day with a monster set of door speakers, with smug comments like "I am surprised that your can hear anything out of those little speakers, you should have got a proper set like this mate"

I will never forget his smug face when he was installing them, in his Escort.
Until he found out that his front windows would only wind down by about 2 inches.

I dug these two Audioline units out today along with some others Bob, the Audioline 403 and 405 models that have the spectrum analyzer and built in graphic equalizer, love these two units.

Saisho and a Sparkomatic Denver, typical 80's style.

The Goodmans GCE280 pictured below with the built in graphic equalizer, the analogue radio turner is built into the cassette door, how advanced that was.

I have one of those Audioline units, the one on the bottom. I also have a Boombox in my workshop rather like the Saisho but l can't recall what it is. I'll take a picture next time I'm up there. The radio struggles to hold a station though which is a bit annoying.

Brian Eno has quite a collection of Boomboxes.

I had to google him.

What's the condition of the aerial like Gary, many get damaged, or you could have some dry solder joints.

I pulled out some 80's PYE SP50 door speakers today which are still boxed, will go with the PYE CC70 radio cassette.

You had to google Eno?

I'm not sure about the aerial. It does have a seperate fine tune knob which l suspect could be a gimmick gone U/S. I'll have a look when l'm up there in a couple of days & take some pictures for you. I only fished it out of a lock-up l moved out of recently. I quite like it.

Default Oh yes...

Music is the answer to most things, it brings calm, memories, smiles and much more. In 1990 I had a Tandy brand Memorex CD player that cost me £240 back then, I fitted in my then Cortina Crusader along with some parcel self Bass Reflex speakers, I paired them to the front door speakers and played it loud, Pinball Wizard by Elton John on an in car CD player was something else. I found that my balance was affected sometimes because I'd had the music so loud, I'm now fairly deaf as a result of my stupidity but, to have a CD player then was really special.
