"Start Pilot" for my 75
Hi!
I had a problem since Monday, my 75 (2000cc, diesel, 1999) did not want to start. We called the assistance and they sprayed a product called "Start Pilot"; after that, my car started up! The assistance guy mentioned that most likely there is a problem with the spark plugs -- we'll see with the garage. What I wanted to ask you is if you think that such a product may be dangerous for my car, or if it's possible to use it safely in case the car plays a trick on me again. Thank you very much for your ever so valuable input! Best, Enzo |

I think i might be a little concerned with someone that thinks spark plugs might be a problem with a diesel!

I would think he means heater plugs but he would be wrong. The diesel engine in our cars very rarely needs these to start.
Reading through posts on here the problem would seem to be fuel related and first point of call would be a leak back test from what I can see.

Probably just a variation of a product we have in this country called Easy Start.
It's been around for decades here. As Trikey said, hopefully the assistance sent to you meant glowplugs (or heater plugs) & a I agree a leak-back test would be the first thing to do as constantly spraying anything into the intake to get it to start is a bad idea however, It's handy in an emergency. Find & fix the problem, that's the best approach. Last edited by mh007; 25th March 2021 at 07:50.. |

Be VERY careful with easy start. Too much can literally cause a mini explosion in the engine and it has been known to bend conrods or snap crankshafts! My old dad used to say "It just needs a sniff!" Too much and you can actually hear the bangs and knocks! If an engine needs easy start to get it going, it needs work!

They should! Too much of it and the engine fires as the piston is rising, before it should. The engine tries to turn backwards but is being turned the opposite way by the starter motor. Something has to give! It can also strip the oil from the bore and rings. I've seen broken rings, bent rods and holed piston crowns.
