Maybe I can throw some light! I've just (about an hour ago) had a very long phone call from British Gas. Note: FROM BG. They were offering a 'fix' to avoid possible price rises in the future.
Possible? Do me a favour. The Geordie lass was very pleasant and helpful and managed to maintain that throughout. After a lengthy conversation she agreed to organise a review by the Energy Consumption Unit within the organisation. Talk about a 'Fix'. She happened to mention that my DD was roughly the same as a busy fish and chip shop and using 27,000 cu.ft. of Gas alone. Yup! She also gave me details of my 'standing', payment wise. Result: Substantial credit to be refunded via DD system and, if I can find a 5 star hotel on Sicily that doesn't insist on a stupid vaccination, possibly Taormina, a lovely month in the sun. I'm considering a solicitor's letter seeking damages.

We're with British Gas too. I've just provided my readings and we're in quite a bit of credit.
Strange they're not suggesting we drop the DD a little. Not. |

You have a number of options, you can either drop the DD and handle the energy price rise when you re-fix (or drop to the variable to take advantage of the tariff in place at the time)
Or you can drop the DD but transfer the money you're 'saving' into a savings account (e.g. Chase at 1.5%) so you have the money building up in your own account AND you're earning interest on it. Or you can leave the DD where it is and build up the credit in your energy companies account ready for when the higher prices hit. No doubt there are other options, but those seem to be the obvious ones.

They've dropped it by £20/month.
I'm happy with that. |

My programmed default is 18C during the day, 16C during the night. I am reasonably well insulated, so it is rare for it to trigger at 16C over night. If I feel chilly on an evening, I nudge it up to 20C. Long ago, I swapped all commonly used lights to LED types.

Your returned water, for best efficiency, should be as cool as possible, so it takes up the boiler's heat more efficiently. The best boilers are able to modulate their output, so they provide just the amount of heat needed, to match the demands.

I would have thought that would use more fuel as it needs to reheat the water. Lag all the pipes so the only major heat loss is via the radiators, send water back to boiler "hot" and it only has to heat it a little, therefore little demand. I am very surprised by what you say but I don't know enough to disagree. macafee2 |

For best economy you boiler's outlet and inlet temperatures should be the same.
