Default Metal to metal scraping sound from rear!

Good morning,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to solve a problem.

Car - Rover 75 Tourer CDi

As I drive around left hand bends or worse still when I have passengers in the back, there is an awful metal to metal scraping noise from the rear.

I have replaced rear discs and pads (Backing plates no problems), springs are in perfect shape (No breaks - 24 months old) and everything else around the suspension appears solid, i.e. bushes etc do not appear perished.

I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem, and can point me to the cause.

Cheers

Tim

When that happened to me it was because my handbrake shoes were down to the metal and the wheel bearings needed to be changed, so there was a little bit of movement when I turned corners which made the handbrake shoes come into contact (the scraping noise). I have an automatic so never used the handbrake anyway, wound it down to stop the noise and changed the bearings and shoes a little later.

I think you are within 2 miles of Jules. Absolute expert on 75's and ZT's.
He will diagnose and fix for you

Hi Harrisop48, Yes, but I like to have a tinker on the smaller jobs first

I'll change the back plates and brake shoes first before disturbing Mr Jules, I've got a bigger job for him, when he's free.

Cheers

I would have thought you'd have noticed if the handbrake shoes & backplates were ok when you changed the rear discs.
Or did you change these a while ago ?
It's worth supporting the rear end off the ground first & checking for freeplay (with the wheels on).
Give them a spin aswell & listen for any abnormal noises (with the exception of the normal scuffing from the pads etc).
As myrover2013 has said, you could possibly have a wheel bearing gone.

I changed the discs and pads yesterday and the brake shoes appeared to be firm i.e. not loose, but I did not check to see if the pins were still fixed to the back plate. As for the bearings, I had these replaced about two years ago.

I have a new set of back plates, so will replace them in the morning and see if that cures the problem, if not, a trip up the Nant, to see Mr Jules

Cheers

Tim

Well, hopefully problem solved!

Wheel Bearing in bits, made no noise when spinning the wheel whilst jacked up, but on removing it for the replacement of the brake back plates, it fell to bits.

Obviously a poor quality part was fitted less than two years and 6000 miles ago.

Thanks everybody for your help, and Andy didn't change the back plates after all, as they were in good nick.

Cheers

Tim
