Default Home Made Spare Parts

The rubber seals under the bonnet at the top of the front wings on my Baby have perished quite badly, and really look a mess. Sadly, it appears that these are no longer available new, and I would imagine that second hand ones won't be much better than the ones I already have You can see one of them here, though I should add that the photo makes it look better than it actually is:

I decided to get some modelling foam and have a go at making my own. The end result is here:

The right hand side still needs a slight trim to get to to align correctly with the long rubber seal along the bulkhead, but other than that, it's a major improvement.

It got me wondering: What other home made solutions have other members found for parts that are no longer available? I'll bet there's a plethora of good ideas out there, so lets here some of them.

Great job Cliff
There could be a market for these

I managed to find a decent second hand pair a couple of years ago after mine got eaten by a mouse!

Thanks guys. I started put with a big block of foam, and it's pretty much all gone after several aborted attempts ended up in the bin.

I couldn't get the dip in the top to look neat. Then after several attempts, it dawned on me I could just leave it flat and let the weight of the bonnet form the correct shape in the foam.

So what other fixes have folk come up with? I know there's Stocktakes self test VIS motors, Kaisers metal thermostat, and the modified hand brake compensator, but I'm thinking more of cheap easy things that anyone could make in their shed.

I'm intrigued by this foam. I see Styrofoam, but don't think that would do. Have you an eBay link?

Here's the stuff I got: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302021949179

When it arrived, I wasn't at all certain it would do the job. It's not very spongy and when you cut it, it can go a bit "furry" (for want of a better word).

In the end though, it worked quite well, and I found that after cutting, you could seal the surface and get rid of any fluffy bits by heating a knife and holding the blade briefly against the foam.
