Default Hole for oil change

Has anyone cut a hole in the under tray to remove the sump plug without removing the tray?
My missus's MG3 has one and makes servicing a lot quicker

Although I take my undertray off usually, two days ago I used the hole that was already cut in my tray to change the oil. It was already cut in it when I bought it, I presume by the garage that did the servicing onit.

I think next time I do an oil change may look at cutting a hole in the tray with a hole saw

I seem to remember the idea was to suck the oil out for routine services as per BMW practise.

A lot of garages do that anyway. Time saving.

I do too as it happens

Different people have different views on this.

There are no dredges in the bottom of the sump, and if you did have, your engine would need more than an oil change.

It's been proved a few times with people removing the sump for the first time, and finding nothing even after many years/miles of motoring.

It's how they change the oil on boat engines too, for obvious reasons.
