EGR Bypass Worth It?
Been having issues with idling and sluggish performance on my cdti. Maf sensor was changed as I thought that was the issue. But, I'm now starting to think it's the EGR valve causing me the issues.
Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong place, but what are people's opinions on the EGR bypass? Is it worth doing, or is it better just to give the EGR a good old clean? Regards, Shug |

+1 on the new fuel filter!
Years ago I had a Rover metro diesel and the first time I changed the fuel filter there was a noticeable increase in performance. After a while I noticed the car was feeling a bit lethargic so I changed the filter again and the once again the performance was back. From that point onwards I changed the filter whenever there was a noticeable drop in general liveliness of the car. I seem to remember I was changing the filter about every six months or so. Because of this, I change the filter in my 75 every 12 months, and I only do about 7 or 8k a year in my 75. As for the Egr, I cleaned mine out then disconnected it so it should stay clean. Mine was unbelievably dirty and the opening was probably restricted by at least 30%. Not sure if you would be able to tell any difference between a cleaned out Egr or a bypass, I would say, probably not.

Just give the EGR a good clean then disable it, there's no difference to performance by fitting a bypass
Despite what the people flogging them might say Russ

A number of years ago I went to Malvern Diesels, about my poor running Land Rover, and the first thing the mechanic did was change the fuel filter. I protested that I had only changed it a couple of weeks previous. He stated , that he always changed the filter before doing any other analysis , as it took that out of the equation. He then opened mine up with a can opener he had on the wall, it was totally black and blocked. Lesson learned and problem solved.
I worked for BMC/British Leyland/ Rover/Land Rover and we had a lot of trouble in the late 70's with warranty claims on diesels due to blocked filters . The problem often turned out to be due to fitting none original cheap replacements , which although the right filter pore size , had less than half the area so blocked up quicker. One way of making them cheaper! Since then I change mine each year irrespective of mileage and sooner if I feel necessary Last edited by RoverP480; 4th April 2020 at 09:13.. |

I fitted mine a couple of years ago, the increase in performance & fuel economy was noticeable immediately, best mod I have ever made, but it has to be hidden before the MOT is done

If you are going to clean your EGR
1 2 It will work better but remember if the EGR is gunked up the manifold will be also, & the MAP sensor fitted to the side of it, so remove them and clean them too. some are worse than others. 3 Clean it out 4 5 Map sensor blocked 6 7 Also check all the vacuum hose from the EGR & the EGR solenoid. Change air filter if you have not in the last 12 months 8

just disconnect the vacuum tube, after cleaning the egr, then bend the tube and attach it with a serrated clamp for example, so there is no loss of vacuum when the solenoid wants to open the egr

Hi Geoff.
Cut the hose coming from the EGR to the solenoid then add a solid bar about 25mm long insert into both ends of the small hose that will block it off. I finished three manifolds today and they all have the small hose lead with a block bar inserted so when fitted the hose from the solenoid just pushes onto it. 1 2 3

I have one of Arctic’s Modified EGR’s (Looks standard so MOT man thinks its not been changed) and Manifold, and with a Custom MAF less remap my car is so much faster across all the rev range, so for people that say it makes no difference I say to them they have not done it correctly. Because you can get more power from an EGR bypass if you do it correctly, i.e. like Arctic says you also need to make sure all the other parts are clean etc, an EGR bypass on its own will not boost your power.
