Default The youth of today

I am not sure if it just me but why do the youth of today seem to have a lack of sense of humour.

I was telling a joke to the wife's son last night and he looked at me as if I had grown a second head. The wife and I thought it was funny, when he had left we realised none of the young we come into contact with laugh or tell jokes.

Please tell me I am wrong. I always thought the British had a great sense of humour.

If you'd posted it on FB he'd have thought it was hilarious.

Some -not all - prefer not to find anything amusing - preferring instead to be offended by the thoughts and actions of all those who do not think exactly as they do.

When the pendulum of acceptable behaviour swings back from this extreme bigotry - there will be much laughter.

But for now - most kids just go along with it for fear of the “Cancel Culture” fad.

Er, it might depend a bit on the joke Steve? On the other hand, you are after all an adult. That's a foreign land. And juvenile minds are unfathomable, deliberately.

I think you are correct, we were explaining to our children ( they are all in there late 20s) about Love they Neighbour. I found it on You Tube and played an episode, you have never seen 4 jaws hit the floor so quickly. When we told them that was Saturday night viewing they were even more shocked.

We have to be careful about what we say in front of them as we get accused of being sexist, racist or biased. With health and safety and the lack of humour I think the future looks bad.

Also I find it odd that most youths seem to have there devices on silent most of the time, I was trying to get hold of one of my sons, I had rung him 4 times with no answer and in the end I rung his brother and he passed me across to him as they were together, ''he hadnt looked at his phone''.

I am glad I am not young, yes it would have some advantages but I am glad I am in my 50's, I can laugh, I can hang off a ladder with no ear defenders on and when my phone rings I answer it or at least ring back when I can.

They should enjoy The Dick Emery Show then.....

But we do see this - or similar from time to time. “Every generation blames the one before” as the song goes. In my day it was Pirate Radio - neither of my parents could understand that we wanted to listen to the actual artist - not some aged trio massacring a song on “Workers Playtime” because the Musicians Union dictated that they should treat a recording as if they had purchased it as sheet music.

Then my brother and I introduced Mum to Radio Veronica of which Radio 2 is the closest today. She loved it and never went back to “The Light Programme”.

My point is that new ways of doing things come along that are not always understood by the generation before.

Today, we have a generation where some are easy prey to manipulators who treat the younger generation as useful idiots who they can wind up (in both senses) and let them do their bidding. Poor little Greta Thunberg is probably the best know example here.

Cancel Culture is rife, Statues are chucked in the canal because some want to re write history. Say an innocent but truthful comment that is not deemed Politically Correct by the New Woke Order and you can lose your job, your college place and be viciously verbally attacked simply for stating a truth that the Woke would prefer to have written out of reality.

Thank goodness there is a backlash to this. Roger Daltry, Johnny Rotten and now Sean Ono-Lennon have said truths that put the Woke idiocy on the back foot.

JR - said it is divisive and leads to trouble

RD -said of the Woke generation what a miserable world they are creating.

And SO-L has stated that instead of tackling racial inequality, it has set race relations back.

At least in the 1960’s and 1970’s I think the aims and desires of the younger generation were noble ones around peace and co-existence.

I find it sad when John Lennon’s son says that in the past people “did not self segregate along the tribal lines to the degree that I am seeing today”.

It's funny how we all have different experiences.
My 19 year old son and his pals are always telling jokes and having a laugh. Some are funny, some are not. That's the thing with humour what makes one person split their sides over can cause another person to scratch their heads.
Personally I think that's a good thing

My neighbour’s two children have joke books and always tell me a new joke every time I see them, they’re aged only six and eight. They also have books they use to spot items on a car journey and they’ve to tick them off.

My 2 are 17 and 22, the 22 year old is my daughter and finds some things funny that I find amusing, but I can't see the funny side of things she finds hilarious. The son is the same although he's more on my wavelength with things than the daughter is.
