Good luck Billy - I shall think of you while I'm doing my passenger side one tomorrow.

I squirted PlusGas on all the fastenings last week so I'm hopeful that getting things apart will be straight forward. You can but hope, right?!

In any case, I won't be using a torque wrench to disassemble it, or reassemble it, because I don't believe in them. All you need is a strong right arm and a trust in Jesus!

No not been pedantic Just trying to put into prospective that torque wrenches are for tightening fasteners and while they can undo fasteners , a Strong Arm / Breaker bar is the correct tool for breaking out fasteners
It surprises me with you always promoting superior methods , that you aren't using the best tool for the job which is a Strong arm / Breaker bar for undoing fasteners.
May be you ought to invest in one for your tool kit !

And that's the crux of it isn't it. That's what you and Mike don't like.

Not at all Simon ! You are only challenged when you aren't promoting the superior method and rightly so , Even then like now you can't accept it and have to have the last word

You know what??---This long thread is making me more and more amazed.---I know of an old and feeble pensioner that managed to do this job ( me ) with hardly any trouble at all.----

I do have a torque wrench ( not used ) but an 18" length of alloy scaffold tube as my breaker bar.--Used to loosen and tighten those recalcitrant bolts.---( good descriptive word that. ) with the aid of one of my legs. Lol. )

The word---Paragon---keeps popping into my mind though I can't think what's causing it.----------------------------Help.

I thought this thread was about wishbone help?? Artic has done a great write up on how to do it

As ex mg rover technician our torque wrenches had to be calibrated every year and not used as breaker bars as this will put them out of calibration

Quite simple use a breaker bar to undo tight bolts or follow Artics excellent guide

Did you read any of the posts that said they were NOT being used out of calibration ???---( for doing up, or undoing. )

Checking a piece of equipment that is going to be used on something that's going to be sold to the public is a ---Must-Do.

I totally agree that ARCTIC has done an excellent write up.-----( very suitable especially if the member is not mechanically minded. )

But as I mentioned in an earlier post--The saying there's more than one way to skin a cat can be applied to this problem.----I did the job my own way and it turned out just fine.

'bout time the brakes were applied to this thread I reckon.---It really has run its course.

Should we put the "myth" to bed about using calibrated torque wrenches as breaker bars?

There are also other practices that you believe are myths, like engine oil does not degrade with age, so should only be changed on a mileage basis.
Or that it is a myth that timing belts should be changed on a time interval, as they last forever and, again, should only be changed on a mileage basis, irrespective of how old they are!

My belief is that you have a right, if you want, to abuse your tools and your car.
However, it is not good form to try to convince others to do the same.

C'mon chaps - I think we should all be adult enough to participate in this sort of discussion without it getting unpleasant and personal.

Ok - we do things in different ways - let's agree to differ and move on, it's just not that important.
