Under Cover Boss, Pickfords
Watched undercover boss about Pickfords, the removal company.
I found it quite annoying but a bit unsurprising that an MD is so far removed from the front line they don't know what is going on. 4 things got to me. Poor rate of pay for porters, £8 something an hour Crew sleeping in the back of removal lorries on "blankets" Disgusting working conditions at one of the sites, Barking No pay rise for 11? years Why did the MD not know these things, where was the management structure passing grievances up the chain or was it lower management not wanting to raise anything in case they themselves were viewed in a bad light? That MD really needs/needed to look at his management and ask them why he did not know! I suspect there are other big name companies where the top table have not got a clue about those on the front line, or do they know but not care? macafee2 |

This issue is a significant one - and not just at Pickfords, or industry in general.
It is seen in both Private and Public sector. One organisation we worked with had “communication issues”. It took a while but in the end we identified a tier of management that simply did not pass things on. Monthly and Quarterly reports were required. But it was clear these reports were not being acted upon despite really useful their being a huge valuable information source by those at the sharp end. So we got the report writers to add challenges within the report - simple things like “we will buy you a beer if you read this far and respond”. Not one of these challenges were taken up. We then traced the reports as to what happened to them - they went into a store room - kept for about 6 months and then destroyed. It was a wake up call for that company and within three months things had changed. I suspect middle management in Pickfords practiced “Mushroom Management” that extended both up and down. Senior Management need to look out for this - fair play to Pickfords MD for doing it openly on TV. - not sure if that was the wisest option tho’. |

Dr Mr Darcydog,
Thankyou for your very informative correspondence and the matter it contains, now, in line with your statement on the seventh line of your communication “we will buy you a beer if you read this far and respond” I hereby claim my free beer. Many thanks D...
