Thanks for all replies, I think I can now answer this:

When the mauve wire to the motor is +ve, the pump will spin one way and pump water to the outlet on that side - when the other wire is +ve the other outlet gets the water, and so on to the front or rear of the tourer.

The motor lives above the pump in the large black cylindrical housing seen in Daveo's pic. The pump has two outlets (one for each direction of turn) which go to the off-white cylinder mounted at 90degrees at the base of the pump. Think of a hotel's revolving door, with a divider seperating the 2 halves of the exit.

This, second, cylinder turns the outlets through 90degrees, to where you can see the hoses attached above. It looks like the this cylinder can be removed from the motor body, but that's an adventure for another day...

I can confirm the polarity of mine changes correctly, but I thhink the PO might have been sold the wrong pump. Still, it works on the front screen for now so that's an improvement at least.

Update (as above failed to send when I was rushing earlier):

When it was sending water to the front screen whichever switch was used, I had only turned the ignition key without starting the car. When I had the car out for a run today it worked perfectly on the rear when desired! No, I can't answer that one, but at least all is well. Sorry to have taken everyone's time, but I hope this thread might be useful to some.
