i had a smell and leak on my tank when it was fullish, it was the rubber ring that sits under the tank inspection cap. Just need reseating properly

I can't see much in your tiny photo, but I suspect your tank seal is leaking. There are two seals around the pump (offside) and the filter module (nearside). If someone has been working on one of these, then they have not replaced the seal correctly. They can be fiddley and they have to be placed exactly right before tightening up the clamp ring around the port. There's a lot of info on this because it's associated with the fitting of the essential Orange Clip.
