There seems to be a rush of broken springs of late,usually after a cold night.
How about "Pipe Lagging"

several coating options have been looked at like rubber dip or powder coat, trouble with them all is they will eventually let water in against the spring and rust it away where it can not dry and you can not see it...

nice thought though....

Waxoil is a good alternative
