Default Premium Diesel Fuel

When re-fueling yesterday I noticed two diesel pumps, one for standard and the other for premium/special. I filled with normal diesel as previously. I asked the cashier regarding the difference and she said the premium is supposed to be cleaner, better for the engine and result in improved MPG. She also said that some drivers use a mixture of both.

As I am new to diesel car ownership, does premium offer any real benefits?

My car only covers a relatively low mileage so MPG is of little concern.

I'll watch this with interest.
With petrol and towing a caravan I noticed a better performance using premium but only used it when towing the caravan

FWIW these are my mot emissions on ordinary diesel

Hi,

I've only ever had diesel 75/ZT's. I've run with BP Ultimate etc. and the car "feels" a bit better but I didn't find any magical big improvement of mpg.

This thread is interesting reading:

I think making sure the fuel filter is changed regularly and using some Forte diesel cleaner when you do is a wise move.

Enjoy your lovely new car

Diesel and petrol. Both fuels are full of imagination medicine. And you pay for it.⚡️

I've found there is negligible difference in MPG in Morrsions or Shell ( my 2 locals) and the prices are up and down like a whatnot! .

So use Shell when they sre close or match prices or Morrisons when theres a few pee difference Per litre

Even tried the expensive Shell ultimate , with no real change other than the MPG was a bit worse for the xtra7p a litre .

All based of 120k miles + in this old bus

I use Premium diesel now in my BMW as that is the only diesel they sell at Costco and it's the same price or cheaper as the normal stuff everywhere else. I think their main claim is it keeps the engine cleaner.
To me, the car runs perfectly exactly as it did when I used Tesco's cheapest.
Every tankful is a brim to brim mpg check and over the last four years I have not noticed any discernable difference in mpg between premium and cheapo.
I will stick with the Costco Premium as it's not out of my way and as cheap as any.
Who knows, it may keep the engine cleaner.

Premium is supposed to keep the engine cleaner and thus keep your particulate filter cleaner. Might give a mile or two more per galleon.

For anyone who has got a car with a particulate filter that is good news.

Mine too Andy, although I've done a few miles more. They do seem to go very well on the cheap stuff.
