Production of the first Morris Mini and Austin Se7en Coopers began at Longbridge on 11 July 1961. John Cooper recognised the sporting potential of the Mini right from the start, when the first prototypes appeared on the track. Issigonis initially rejected the idea of a high-performance variation of the Mini, seeing his baby as a people’s car, but Cooper was persistent and managed to persuade the BMC to manufacture 1,000 cars for homologation purposes. BMC’s Managing Director George Harriman offered John Cooper a Ł2 royalty on every ‘Mini Cooper’ sold, and BMC took on the development of the production car under the codename ADO50. *****Copied from another site
