Windows 7 is 'end of life' as of Jan 14 2020. No further updates are being supplied for it. You should update to be using a modern system for security reasons.

Yes.
It does replace your old hard drive, an SSD is basically a memory card version of the hard drive, it has no moving parts and they boot up really fast. If you install a gamer style graphics card at the same time, you can be booted up and on the internet in about 15 seconds. I've got both in mine on Windows 7 but I will be upgrading my OS very soon.

I use a 1Tb M2 ssd as my boot drive and a standard 1Tb ssd for games etc. Boots into Win 10 in around 5 seconds after the post screen. My Win 7 pc with a std ssd boots in around 15 secs but thats an old install with a pretty bloated registry.
