2004 rover 75 1.8 petrol will not start

Hi guys, I'm totally lost and desperate for help.
One afternoon I went to my car but it wouldn't start up. Called the AA out there came but couldn't find the problem. Apart from saying my fuel pump had packed up. Trouble is you could hear it priming. Anyway changed the pump. Still didn't start. Crank and cam sensors changed. Still didn't start. New coil pack and plugs Still didn't start. There just isn't a signal (not spark). Sprayed easy start and the car will run. Am I missing something silly.

Hello Derek,

Have you checked the fuel filter for loosening and the presence of the "orange clip"? There's lots on the forum about it together with warnings that the pump is very unlikely to be the problem, particularly if it primes!

On mine it turned out to be a faulty fuel pump relay, it’s on the fuse board under the dashboard.

If its a late petrol engine as said you need to see if the fabled orange clip(FOC) has been fitted to the fuel filter to prevent filter separation - common on later petrol engines - also check the spade connector to the starter motor from the battery - if dirty/corroded it will cause non starts (would expect AA man to check that though)

Just can't get the 75 to start. 1.8 petrol.
My friend has the car at his garage repair shop but can't find the fault. We had new fuel pump, new coil pack, new ignition switch, crank and cam sensors. Fuel is coming up but will not start. I'm now looking for someone who has a t4 that might be willing to help. I gutted I love this car.

Have you checked to see if the fuel filter has a clip fitted - if not in later petrol models this causes non starts - its a classic reason and many cars have been scrapped for not knowing this fact - the clip is below on e bay for £7.00.

Its a must for later petrol engines - if a clip is fitted the next thing to look at on a 1.8 is a corroded spade connector to the starter motor from the battery.

Check both these before you do anything else.

Have you the checked cam position sensor is serviceable?

If you have sprayed the car with easy start and it starts then you have proved that there is a spark etc and the problem is on the fuel side. Just because there is fuel at the engine does not mean it is at sufficient pressure.
The fuel filter clip is the first point of call as the later cars are prone to the filter becoming loose (ever so slightly) and this in turn stops the fuel pressure reaching the required figure to allow the engine to start.
There should be a Schrader valve in the engine compartment that will help you establish the fuel line pressure.
