Fortunately, without wishing to tempt fate, it now seems to be behaving itself, having had most of the suspension, all the brakes replaced etc. So hopefully another few years.

But when it does become uneconomical to keep, it’s electric for me – you can get a low mileage Leaf with owned battery for something like £8k, and I only do short journeys now, so if I had a charging point at home I can’t see the down side.

But of course it depends on your needs. I always thought about something Rover-like till I realised my requirements had changed since I bought her nearly 11 years ago… my girlfriend has a little Aygo, and I’ve found myself looking for excuses to drive it – it’s like hurtling around in a dodgem, handles well, uses little petrol, and you can park it in small spaces.

If I was looking for performance… somebody mentioned the M3. I had two, between 2005 and when I got the Rover in 2010, and found them excellent – fast, comfortable, not as heavy on the fuel as you’d think – and bulletproof if serviced properly. Only drawback is the regular excursions backwards through hedges onto your roof every time it rains, but nothing’s perfect

Oh, and my mechanic has one of the Chinese MG6’s – the trim is epically ghastly, but it’s actually pretty good to drive.
I agree. Its electric for me next. I liked my 75. Had it for 10 1/2 years. It toured well. I could never understand th back end though. It seemed to look like a disgruntled Austin Cambridge with a annoying water incontenant problem.. I bought a cheap (Audi/VW) thing that does everything i need.. As with all of us th time will come and we need to modernize and move on.

Depends on your needs of course... I live in N Ireland, where it's not easy to find a trip which exceeds the range of an electric motor. And most of my trips are more like 20-40 miles total. I wouldn't entertain one if I was doing any long distances.

But just think... cooling system problems? Hasn't got one. Head gasket? Hasn't got one. Injectors? In fact entire fuel system? Clutch/slave cylinder etc? Gearbox? Exhaust system? Hasn't got any...

If I WAS getting a "replacement Rover", I've known a couplf of people who've had Mazda 6's long term, and wouldn't have anything else. One is diesel and one V6 2.5, IIRC - just like the Rover

And, in the right colour, the body looks a little retro too...

That is going to be hard. The KV6 is an auto with toys, the diesel is a club manual.Problems problems.Certainly it will not be an electric car..
Hi Dave,

Decisions, decisions......

I think I'd be keeping the KV6. You're not like me where we're up and down to the North East for babysitting duties every few weeks so the economy mile munching of the diesel isn't so important and you'll be keeping all the lovely toys.

As for me, because of Quizzie we need an estate sized car.

We'll probably be looking at Which's two most reliable cars:

Lexus CT200h and/or Lexus RX450h Or, for me as a saloon alternative - GS 450h

But all else being equal that'll be a fair few years away yet. Already tried a Passat and that just wasn't a 75.

having an MGF means that there is not always enough space, if/when you get serious.
So to alleviate that problem, I bought a 2000 2 liter Ford Mondeo Estate.
I can only say I have been very impressed with that. The only issue seems to be rust over the rear wheels.
Nice and comfortable, very good seat, not as nice inside as the Rover but economical , fast, and extremely capable, and about half as complicated as the V6 Tourer.
And that is the facelift original version. Since then there has been another 4 or 5 improvements/new releases, and if they have indeed all been improvements! then it must be a stunning car in the current version, I suspect.

Infiniti Q70???

A leftfield choice. Soft, pleasing ride in most forms.

MGZT? Not exactly the same and the rides a bit firmer. Chris S.

May go for something like a Kia Sportage or a Hyundai Ix35 for ease of access! Built like a brick outhouse I believe???

When the time comes? Hmmm! My late 2001 KV6 auto tourer has just got through its MoT, so another year's motoring ahead. I picked it up from a dealer in Derby just over 6 years ago for the princely sum of £850. I've spent around 10 times that on it since then, getting it (almost) back to showroom standard. just the headlining still to do. It's got all the toys and a lovely aubergine interior trim with no wet carpets yet. What could I possibly replace it with that wouldn't cost me at least double? It's been a reliable car in that time; not environmentally friendly of course but as I normally only use it for the longer runs, the engine's usually running at its most efficient (for a KV6). Until something major develops, like mysterious electrical glitches or a catastrophic engine failure (belts changed for the second time in my ownership last year), why waste my investment by driving something inferior? For urban journeys, the wife's got a 'nice' little i10 that one day, we might replace with a small EV.

I dont think i'll be putting mine through another MOT as it will need quite a bit of work doing (both front bearings, exhaust, roll bar bushes, rear disks and pads) so will be looking to buy something else in the summer.

The modern cars ive been reading up on (Mondeo, Insignia, Focus, Astra, Citroen DS4) all seem to be plagued with problems

Very spacious and very comfortable but....

Some of the petrol engines are the E888 - worth looking up which generation as some are rather less than reliable.

The diesels can caught up in the emissions scandal.

You'll need to get very specific about exactly which engine/spec is fitted and if it's been "fixed" following the emissions debacle.

These might help:

Good Luck.
