Hi guys,

Just after a little advice really as I am bit of a beginner with this photography stuff.

Right all my life I have always used compact point and shoot.

I would now like to venture in to the world of SLR....

I have been looking around on the tin ter net as you do and also in shops to get the feel etc.

A friend of a friend has offered me his Nikon D100 with several lenses, 2gb card, mono pod, flash and other extras for £500

Now I wasnt too sure if that was a resonable price as in the day they were in the region of 2k.

Looked on ebay and ones with half the kit seem to go for half the price etc.

Anyway I was just after some profesional input and or advice on other SLR cameras. I wasnt quite looking at spending that much TBH...

Anyway enough of my waffle....

It's difficult to be sure about whether that's a good price without knowing more about which lens(es) are included in the deal, but I suspect it might not be.

The trouble with digital capture is that it's still in its relatively early days, and the pace of change in DSLR technology is really fast. Since the D100 was launched in early 2002, there have been several new generations of Nikon DSLR, each bringing better image quality, handling, autofocus, battery life, etc. The D100 was a state-of-the-art camera in its day, and is still capable of producing great images, but one of today's entry-level cameras like the D60 will, I'm afraid, beat it in most areas.

As Brian says, looking at a D100 shows how quick DSLR evolution has been this decade. Could you post what lenses are included?

You might be better with a D40 (or older D70 is better in my eyes), with a single Sigma/Tamron/Tokina 18-50/2.8 zoom.

Have to agree. Newer DSLR's have more advanced features and better user interfaces.

You could have a brand new eos 450D with 12mp for under £500. Plus it will have a full warrenty and cashback (I think) from canon.
