Default Drivers door lock flap broken? – Read on

OK so my driver’s door actuator had to be swapped out (Big shout to Kev who did all the work) but as many people know these can put up a fight. The connector arm from the back of the door lock to the actuator fell off so we had to remove the glass and door handle to get it reconnected. But in all this we lost the little tiny spring that works the flap on the lock grrrrr.

So until I get a handle with a spring I can take out and fit to mine this is the temp solution I have used to make sure no dirt gets in the lock:-

I purchased a 10 pack of 10mm dia x 1mm thick Nickel Plated Steel Disc with 3M Self-Adhesive off the BAY and used one to cover the lock

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10mm-dia-x-1mm-thick-Nickel-Plated-Steel-Disc-with-3M-Self-Adhesive-Pack-of-10/223194816113?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid =p2057872.m2749.l2649

Before

After

Not sure if it will take a jet wash blasting at it but for now will do, and as its magnetic easy to remove when I do get around to fixing it properly.

I think all key locks have them.

I seem to recall getting one from a scarp car was quite a task

Just checked mine. It has a sliding flap.

Maybe yours has, in the past, fallen out.---

Even on a Mk2?

How would it function, it would freeze up before the lock and mean you would be unable to access it properly.

I dont see any sign of where it could be...:-

Are you talking about the tiny flap that covers the key barrel? Pretty sure every car I've owned has one. It stops muck and crud getting into the barrel. And yes, they do occasionally freeze up, but rather that than the whole barrel full of ice or grit.

Maybe we are speaking at cross purposes.

Is this flap on the actual barrel, and has a slot in it for the key?

Cos Ive never seen anything like the above, where the whole hole is covered over with some sort of sliding thing, it would be insane. First thing that would happen is it would get jammed and frozen.

ok if you take off the lock finisher (Around the key hole) there is a small metal plate that covers the lock assembly, now this has a tiny flap in it that is worked by a tiny spring

Its this spring that keeps the flap shut when no key is in the lock, and keeps out the dirt

Its this spring that went missing, so the flap does not shut, so if you look at my first pic the flap is open, all cars should have it shut by default.

Well Sir, Mr T16.

There is a small sliding flap that closes off the actual rectangular key slot itself.

In 12 years of ownership I never found the flap to be frozen shut.----

I think I understand now..

This is a tiny flap in the rectangle of the key slot?

Confused by the big round thing in the OP.

Ahh just read above after my page refreshed... phew, for a minute I couldnt work out how there could be a mech for covering the entire hole, so at least I was only going half crazy.
