This is right.

You indicate to state that you are about to or are actually doing an action. You are not meant to indicate until the action can be started. So if a car is travelling down a road and you are going to pull out behind them you do not indicate until they are level to you or passed you. Th reason for this is if you indicate as they are approaching they may think you are pulling out and slam on the brakes.

Strictly speaking this is how we should all be driving.

An indicator is not there to show other drivers what you may be dong but to tell them what you ARE doing.

On a recent ( 18month ago ) driver safety course I was told that if there is nobody there you don't indicate now.

well I didn't realise that - its not used as a warning then.

the reason I asked about seat belts was I had seen about 4 with no belts in 10 minutes on the way to work and when I asked people at work there was one who doesn't wear a belt as his shirt gets creased by it.

I see the logic there Steven but if your are pulled over and want to enter the flow of traffic then I always indicate so that maybe someone will let me in/out (shake it all about).

I was taught that indicating in this way was an intention of making a manouver, not an automatic right that when you indicate you can just pull out without regard to other road users.

So in future should I be honking everybody mate

So if you are stopped at the side of the road and there is a constant stream of traffic passing you, you cannot signal until there is a space for you to pull out into and there won't be a gap until you signal and somebody slows and makes a gap and lets you out?

Could be a long wait in some places me thinks!

Indicating in the hope that someone will let you out is not something you should have ever been taught. While we all do it it's not what they are for.

You indicate to state you are intending to perform an action and not a prayer to God that someone lets you out.

Mind it was my dad that taught me to drive so he probably passed on his bad habits.

I do agree with Dave's point about about not indicating when there is no traffic around seem's sensible to me.

No it's not just you, It has troubled me for years.
Dad had a car from about 1980 and it was his law that you wore your belt, so it's an automatic thing for me
