Old car scrappage scheme...
Looks like this is probably going to happen...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7995928.stm Two thoughts... 1) So the government will guarantee £2,000 for a trade in. Say you were looking at a new £15,000 car. Currently you can go to the dealer and get it for £11,000 - they are desperate to sell cars, so you get a hefty discount. With the scrappage scheme, do you think you'll get it for £9,000? Not a frickin chance! You'll still pay £11,000 minimum. The £4k discount from the dealer will magically reduce to £2k - the net result, that £2,000 from the government will line the pockets of the motor trade. Pure profit. 2) Not that I believe in the whole "green" argument, but it's clear by the way they calculate 'carbon footprints' that it's not "green" to take a well-maintained 10 year old car and replace it with a brand new one. The CO2 output involved in building a brand new car (transportation, refined steel production, plastic moulding, engineering etc. etc.) is massive! Also, most people will trade in for a bigger car with a bigger engine, so CO2 output will generally increase.

For the amount of miles I do it wouldn't matter if I had a V8 or not. My emissions are low. If I have a lower MPG car then I will only be able to afford to drive it less and thus probably pollute by the same amount so my Carbon footprint is the same either way. This wouldn't encourage me to trade in my car. But I'm glad it will never be worth less than £2k

Totally agree
Went to look at some "modern cars" the other day, just killing time while Mrs Jules shopping for more naff clutter! Sat in some none descript cockpit and nearly puked at the vile smell of plastic. Salesman minced over and said "I'll give you a really good trade in price on that old ZT out there sir" "No you won't" I said "coz it's not for sale.......... ever" So no thanks to a modern car.

I think it's a little late for this scheme when the UK barely produces any cars now most of the money will be going overseas.
The government should be encouraging people to keep and look after their used cars given the amount of energy it takes to build a new one. I may be wrong but I thought more energy is used in manufacturing a new car than the car will use in an average lifetime of use ~7-9 years. |

It's the old Prius argument again.. All these tree hugging uppity self reitchous Prius drivers telling you quite how much they're doing for the environment, when in truth, the damage done during the manufacture and transport of the Prius far outweight the positive impact of the little AA battery in the boot..
I think the British are too much a nation of car lovers to ever fully embrace this kind of offer if it were to come into force.. I mean, seriously.. You want me to swap my big, comfortable, economical fantastic-looking Rover 75 that I own outright for a BRAND NEW Toyota Aygo and a £5K loan.. Wow.. Doesn't get much more appealing than that. As Steve quite rightly said, give a man a £2K voucher for money off a car, and you give a dealer an excuse to charge him £2K more..

Totally agree, it'll only help the industry because people will think they are getting a bargain, when in fact the dealer is just back to his old profit margin!

The only cars that will be traded for this will be those that have been well maintained and their owners can afford a new car, the old polluting wrecks will still be driven because the owners will not be able to afford to buy a new car whether 2 grand is on offer or not.
False economy and only boosting the motor industry for new cars. What will happen to cars like ours with this kind of scheme, there will be less incentive to produce the parts because there would be less demand, not just our cars though. I considered not getting my car because of the potential car tax rises, then I thought I am not letting the government dictate to me the kind of car I can an cannot drive and I have always had nice cars and will continue to do so for as long as I can. Secondhand cars in our sector make very good economic sense.
