72 years ago today was where allied troops landed in France
Let us not forget all those who gave their lives so that we could be free

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

In a fortnights time I will be in Weymouth for the Veterans Week. On the Sunday there will be a parade and service to pay homage to all those that took part , thousands upon thousands left this town for France Redfive has offered to push me along the mile route in a wheelchair if I feel unfit to march, this is the biggest veterans parade in the country with the veterans and world war two vehicles including tanks
its too good to miss if you are in the area

Hear hear.

I've been privileged to have been over there a few times with a veteran. He's still with us and over there now. Could not go this year unfortunately.

The love shown to the veterans is truly heartwarming. A trip to Normandy is well worth it.

Trouble is......as brave and awesome as those guys (and girls) were..... we are still being overun now.

We need to remember the legacy that these all gave us.

Brilliant Post Windrush,

overlord.jpg

This is the plaque for 'Operation Overlord' which is on our Poole Quay, where a lot of the these brave lads departed from.

I have visited the War Cemeteries in France and I'm not ashamed to say I cried.

In the American Cemetery where the brave lads were unknown, their cross's were inscribed 'Known Only To God', and had a red rose placed upon it. All the American graves face towards home (America).

I shed more than one tear that day.

LEST WE FORGET

A few years ago I was installing a new messing system for HMS Dryad and was working in Southwick House. When I took a coffee break I used to sit in the lounge and look at the D Day Map on the wall which has remained untouched all these years.

Amazing how things change through time, we wouldn't ever have a sacrifice like that now.
To much technology..

I've always been very intrigued by anything to do with the war, i have so much respect for what they did and the conditions they did it in.

I highly recommend the book D-Day by deceased American historian Stephen E Ambrose for anyone looking to get a realistic picture of the day.

Excellent post Derek, I hope you are ok for the parade but don't be doing yourself any harm by walking the route if you don't feel up to it

I was over in Normandy, France with my wife and our friends four years ago, and if you have strategic kind of mind, you can not imagine the bravery of all the troops that took part. Truly awe inspiring when you actually see where they came ashore. We watched the lowering of the flags at one of the cemeteries. Must admit it brought a tear to my eyes, to think that people now don't use their vote in this, just about, democracy of ours that was secured by all those brave men.Not being political, but democracy seems to be a forgotten item now. And greed from the top down has ruined what used to be a great country. And back to the 6th of June. Shame.
