Maybe I should have said fade, not dim, as the interior lights fade rather than suddenly go off. Not sure if LEDs can fade, so I just wondered if they would work.

Hi

Well ive looked behind the A pillar and have these wires in the picture,I cant see a purple and red wire ,i have what looks like a purple and white wire ?

From another forum i read this

ones we need are the Purple wire, which is the 12v feed and the Purple/Red wire, which is the earth-return controlled by the 5AS alarm ecu or MFU (depending on the year of the vehicle).

any ideas which 2 wires i need to use ?

thanks julian

Couldn’t you pop the interior light cover off, just to identify which wire go to the earth and bulb supply, then either solder on there, which is what I did, or trace them back to the A pillar?

Purple/White is the feed from the Body Control Unit to the interior lights - switches them on when a door is opened. Earth cable is Black.

This is how I tapped into the interior light to get the switched power for my puddle lights. The same method can be used to power footwell lights. However, LEDs don't fade very smoothly when controlled by the iterior light's supply. I have noticed that LEDs used in the interior light itself fade in a staggered fashion as the ECU reduces the voltage. Presumably this is done digitally, causing LEDs to reduce in steps. Clearly it doesn't affect the appearance of standard filament bulbs. However if the LEDs will be out of direct sight under the footwell, this may not be so apparent.
