thanks a lot, yes the bolt is missing, but it has been missing for ages so probably its not the case.

It won't be that bolt hole, its a back one on the left you have to watch.

As macafee2 says, be careful with the bolts you use, and don't force em if they become tight.

that noise could have been the pipe splitting/ or popping. I think you will find the problem in that area

Yes it would.

The amount of air pumped in has to balance the amount of fuel injected. If you get an air leak, the balance of air to fuel is lost. Way too much diesel and not enough air equals lots of black smoke.

Hi Adam.
Your first port of call is to remove the engine cover, the check the jubilee clip on the hose of the EGR, follow the hose along to see if the hose as a split in it or not, if both the jubilee clip and hose is ok then, you need to remove the hose and change the intercooler O-rings as they have swollen and popped out of the intercooler, classic black smoke and loss of power.
