Rims r15 vs r 16 winter tyres
Hello everyone,
I have currently 195/65/15 tires on standard alloy wheels (r15 rims), its on 1999 connie 2.0 D and I am looking to buy winter tires to travel trough Germany this winter, I found on eBay second hand winter tires from rover 75 (not sure which model/year) but on r16 rims, and they are 215/55 R16. So it's a different rim size and the different width. So my questions is: can I fit them on my car, they winter ones also have 5 hols but will it bolt in strait away. Are the 15 and 16 rims interchangeable between the years? Thanks a lot and best regards, Adam |

They should be as when purchasing a new car you are given a choice of rim and tyre sizes. The car does not have to be modified in any way to accept them.---

Yes, I would assume so but it would be good to be 100% sure

The simple answer to your question is - Yes.
My 52 plate Conny tourer is on 15" wheels (Comets) while my 51 plate Club tourer is on 16" wheels (Unions). They are interchangeable. But as far as I know you must have either all 4 15" wheels or all 4 16" wheels at MoT time. I'm sure someone with technical knowledge about the MoT test will chip in soon. I think you'd be better off with the narrower tyres for winter. The theory being that a narrower tyre cuts into the snow rather than sitting on top of it. But the difference is pretty small. But the reality is that you have the chance of a set of wider tyres on 16" rims. So maybe just go for it and think about whether to swap things around when it's time for new tyres as you might like a bit more rubber on the road for most of the time. Check out the Traders on here to see what wheels they've got. Mickyboy springs to mind as he isn't too far away. Enjoy yourself in Germany Last edited by AndyN01; 24th October 2020 at 20:16.. |

Perfect, thanks a lot for your message.
The reason I started to doubt weather they are interchangeable or not was that a while ago I bought 5 brand new Studs on ebay and when I was trying to put them on they were too long for some reason and didn't fit, so I guess there are at least two different sizes for the studs which made me thinking that maybe the rims are different as well thanks a lot again, and hopefully autobahn will be full of fun and no snow ! Good Luck.
I'll offer a hint. If there's anything you want, need, fancy - always start with Mickyboy Followed by our other traders - they all do a great job of looking after us and really know what's what. A shout up in the Wanted section is worth a go too. Enjoy her. |

Just a bit of advice. If you are going to Germany in the car during winter time, make sure you have proper recognised winter tyres on. You could end up in a bit of trouble if you have not got them on and are stopped by plod. Also, if you do have an accident during the winter in Germany, and you have not got winter tyres on, you will be held responsible even if it was not your fault. I would also as Andy said above, use 195 tyres as the weight on the tyre in contact with the road will have more pressure on the tread in contact with the road, and therefore less prone to losing grip and better braking efficiency. Most people in Germany have an extra set of wheels specifically for the winter.
