I know I should know but can someone kindly describe the steps to replace the underseat SRS airbag yellow connectors with the new black ones which I have ready to use.
What I mean really is, looking under the seats, there are two wires for one connector going into the yellow connector on one side and two (tiny) wires coming out on the other side. And the same with the second connector under the same seat. Ditto the other seat. Can I combine the two wires for one connector into one new black connector, and so on? Or is that fatal? |

And - silly question - should one always disconnect the battery first or is that unnecessary (since I am forever disconnecting and re-connecting the yellow plugs to try and kill the SRS light - and never disconnect the battery then)..

I was forever disconnecting and re-connecting the yellow plugs to kill the SRS light, without disconnecting the battery, however whilst replacing plugs it's highly recommended to disconnect battery, 20 minutes before starting work i believe.

The two connectors under the seat that you are referring to are for separate things, one is the airbag, the other is the seat belt pretensioner, same under the passenger seat. A problem with either the airbag or pretensioner wiring or connectors will trigger the warning light. Replace all 4 connectors.
One thing I would advise is to add about 6" of wire to all of them (solder and heatshrink), replacing the connectors will shorten what is already tight wiring and it avoids the wiring being put under tension by seat movement. You don't have to worry about polarity, the airbags and pretensioners are simple circuits. As stated disconnecting the battery is best practice. |
