Secondly these cars never had a key cutting code supplied from new period, unlike the other MGR models, instead any replacement keys were ordered though Xpart/BMW off VIN, the replacement arriving both pre cut, and fitted with a transponder programmed to the next available vacant slot in the EWS making them operate the immobiliser section of the car without programming. The EWS has ten slots for key transponders, and the BCU four slots for key remotes, two of which are occupied with the original keys, and the oldest slot being overwritten after the forth is occupied........i.e after the car has already had two extra replacement keys. Hopefully this clarifies things a bit for you, Trikey will I'm sure let you know after you fuel him up with biscuits Brian P.S. EWS is an abbreviation of Electronische WegfahrSperre, or drive away protection, and the immobiliser section of the car is entirely standalone from the remote central locking |

Thanks for the excellent explanation.
I was wondering if he knew what he was saying because when I asked a few questions about aspects of it, he wasn't too sure about how to answer. I had read before about having to take it out to read, but didn't want to question his 'expertise'. The keys and immobilizers are my kryptonite. I just don't get them! Also, on my car stereo cars, at the bottom it is printed Key replacement code then a number. It says to order replacement car keys to go to Rover directly and contact them. Is this relevant, or is it relating to the old stereo system. It reads as if relates to the car keys though? Last edited by Fred Pitt; 20th February 2021 at 14:03.. |

Solved
I have at last sorted a spare key for the R75!
With lots of help from Trikey, on here, I was able to affirm what slot my remaining key was coded to. I then rang BMW in Ipswich to get a quote for a key out of interest. They told me they are not able to order keys anymore for Rover 75's? Luckily, they were a bit more helpful than the Norwich branch and forwarded me to an ex Rover dealer in Suffolk, name escapes me now, who then helped me by giving contact numbers of a man who could and had done it for these cars. It is Mobile Key Services, Peter, on the A140 at Long Stratton. He said I could have the full remote option, or the manual key with no remote unlocking. I know my door lock is working fine manually (I check regularly) so I went with the cheaper option. It is only a spare that will probably sit in my drawer anyway! He said I could come back later to get a separate remote fob later if I wanted, for £30, but couldn't then as he didn't have any left. Was done in hour and half, drove home fine with it. Job done! |

Brilliant, if you want a remote coding in I can do that for you at some point.
