I have used winter tyres on the car for years. They are good for cold conditions (below approximately 7c). They give better grip, better braking and overall peace of mind during the winter months compared to a good quality summer tyre. On hard packed snow or ice you need studs, and those conditions you’re unlikely to come across even around Aviemore. And if you do, stay in! I can thoroughly recommend Continental WinterContact TS 870. They are excellent, have a look around the internet or YouTube for some proper testing of these. In 15 inch sizes not that expensive really, mid £60s to £70 per tyre.
