Default My 75 won't start (2.0 Diesel)

I've had my 75 since last Aug with no probs, drove round to the mother in-laws, got back in the car, turned on the ignition, all the right lights came on including 10,000 service message, the engine turned over but just would not start, it didn't even fire. I changed the battery in the key, as this was playing up a bit, total mystery. The only thing I did before I arrived at Mum's was to fill up, I checked the till receipt, yes it was definitely diesel, any ideas, or is there a sequence I can follow to eliminate the obvious. Hope somebody can help. TX Al

You definitely don't hAve a 1.8 diesel. No such thing.

Could be any number of starter relate issues. Is it clicking quickly?

No need to check. If it's a Diesel, it's 2.0l, unless you've got something very unusual indeed.

If you've got a 1.8 and you've put Diesel in it, then you've got a problem

His profile says a 1.8T so presume its a K series so if he has put diesel in then he has big problems

Concerned with no update on this, OP has had car for 8/9 months so must surely have filled up before, perhaps posted a day early?

Yes first thing to check is that the LP under bonnet fuel pump is working - it sits just inboard of the battery behind the fuel filter. Key to position II and the pump should run between 30 seconds and a minute depending on which ECM (electronic control module for the engine) is in the car.

If it isn't check the power supply to it. If you have power then the pump has failed - you can try tapping it to get it going as a temporary fix.

If there is no power then first check is that the plenum drains aren't blocked and the ECM hasn't gone for a swim, and if that checks out then could be a relay fault, or wiring between the relay and ECM.

If the pump is working then unplug the outlet pipe from it where it enters the fuel filter and place in a large jar. Again, with key to position II there should be a strong flow of fuel into the jar.

If you have a late model car with only an in tank fuel pump then still carry out the above test.

Other things that commonly cause failure to start are a dodgy cam sensor, or leaking injectors.

One other important thing: changing the battery in the key won't have anything to do with a non-start, but if the small chip inside the key housing fell out when you changed the battery the car won't start in a month of Sundays.

Try another key if you have one.

Thanks for the info and yes my car is a Diesel, I'm not very mechanically minded and I'm in my 70's so it's a bit of a struggle. I'll work through your suggestions tomorrow, thanks Al

Allen thanks for updating your profile, now the situation is clear and far less confusing, if you don't sort it with suggestions so far, do report back to enable expert help to be freely given by the forum guru's.
