I can only presume that those members are referring that if the area as failed that if the ball point bolt is removed the nut then falls inside the channel? As you can see from the photo's below the ball joint as been removed and the fixing nut is still intake. Gas strut attached to the ball bolt. 1 The preventive plates. 2 Weak spot just to the left of the strut. 3 Tease out the spring clip with a flat bladed screwdriver & at the same time use bull nosed pliers to tease the strut off the ball. 4 With the strut removed from the ball bolt rest the strut at the top of the tail gate, it is also best to use a broom stale or get someone to hold up the tailgate to make sure it does not come crashing down due to having only one strut holding it up. 5 You will now need a ratchet /ring spanner I think it is 15mm the ball bolt can now be cracked loose. 6 Once cracked loose you can remove the bolt with your fingers. 7 Remove the ball bolt completely from the body. 8 The ball bolt can new be matched with the plate. 9 Insert the ball bolt through the plates oval hole this allows for adjustment 10 11 Offer the plate to the car body & screw into the nut hand tight. 12 Once you are happy the plate is lined up correctly 13 Use the spanner to tighten the ball bolt. 14 Then pop on the gas strut to finish the job, repeat the other side as I said in the other post this is only good for preventive measures not to fix an already failed area. 15 So yes the nut never fell inside when i fixed the plate ? cheers Arctic.

For anyone who needs a relatively cheap fix, I found that using a 150mm long, 10mm wide bit of steel, some JB Weld and large pop-rivets provides a sturdy fix.
Looks awful, but I'm well aware that a lot of owners are running these cars as 'bargain basement' machines - and it provides a cost-effective solution. Drill 4 matching holes along the strip and area around the failed mounting (one of the middle holes is where the ball joint itself fits). Use JB Weld on the back of the strip when riveting in place, and then once fixed apply around the edges of the strip to take the loading when in use. Has worked for me opening the boot around 5 times a day (it's my load-lugger) and still holding fine several months later

Tourer Strut preventive Mod
Those that have a Tourer will most likely have heard of the gas strut breaking out of the side panel, below is a preventive mod to help stop that from happening, I added three sets to different Tourers at the meet the weekend by using the plates in the photo's.
Chris Tourer. 1 2 3 Steve (Devlish) Tourer. 4 5 Duncan's Tourer. 6 7 A pair was also given to Scott for his tourer.

Today I went to Screwfix for a gate latch, while there I also spotted these below in the book, a jointing plate 97mm X 35mm & 2mm thick 10pk £3.49. code 66707.
https://www.screwfix.com/p/jointing-...questid=397224 These look to be just the job also if you require to do this fix on the tourer tail gate, you would have to drill a centre hole to allow the ball socket to screw back into the car as above in the how to photo's.
