I have always used 10W40 as per the earlier Rover schedule, and for the last 5 years or so Triple QX semi-synthetic bought from https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/ when they have one of their better than usual sales on.

Since 2008 when I bought the car, I used Magnatec 10/40 up until this year in March. Never used any oil between changes. I now run on Magnatec 5/40 C3 . Castrol recommendation for our diesels. Same results as the 10/40 A3/B3-4 on test, just less pollution emitted. Has not used any oil since changing to C3.

Oil tends to be personal preference.
I use Castrol GTX and a genuine oil filter every service when the indicator tells me.
Been doing this for over 10 years now with no problems

Tends to show also how well these engines were made.-

Just noticed in the above posts that the replies are from what you would call Old-Timers on the forum.---

Exactly, these BMW diesel engines are well engineered and manufactured, looked after, they are capable of >350K miles without even trying, that says something!
