I have a pair of identical HP computers.--One doesn't want to switch on.

I have a couple of diode lights that plug into the sides of the computer to light up the keyboard.--When I press the button to turn on the computer these lights flash then go out. The computer however won't turn on.---

My computer started to be very slow at anything I did. Was told to change the battery and that it is also for memory of operational things.
Changed it twice in the last 18 years. Yes I know, it’s nearly as old as me, but like me it still works.

Is that the small button battery, the CR 2032 battery. The main battery on my HP computer is along the back of the computer and is about a foot long.--I usually keep the charger connected whenever I am using it

No it won't stop the pc from booting however you will likely need to enter the bios on startup to reconfigure boot drives etc and to reset the date. It is the Cmos battery that supplies the power to enable the storage of this info and allows your pc to boot into whatever operating system you have installed.
