Thumbs up

Nice sobering post - The feature makes a good point!
Guess that would apply to air and pcv filters too!
The difficulty is knowing where the reasonably priced OEM quality filters are to be found!

Can't say I've ever looked for MANN but I've heard that Mahle are good.
I tend to end up buying from Unipart but quite where their parts fit in on the scale of quality not sure but pretty good quality so far....

Very interesting.

Worth watching all the way through for anyone who thinks they are saving by buying cheaper service parts (Im one of them!). More important if you have a turbo!

I guess one interpretation of the video is always fit a Mann filter if you want OEM quality. Unfortunately you can't strip down your selected after-market filter to find if it matches OEM. It basically says you get what you pay for. A nice bit of Mann marketing, but I don't think you'll go far wrong with an industry leader like Unipart.

A few very good points in that video - I've had a few awful filters in my time (poor bypass valve construction, leaking seams etc) and as such only stock parts I've used myself, and know to be decent.

Unfortunately as with most things these days, it's all about pricing and at the end of the day, if it's cheap it usually sells! It's when I have emails regarding repeat failure, having to do entire jobs again and a total saving of about £10 (and losing a day to re-do the work) that I realise it's worth pressing on with quality parts for enthusiasts, and hoping one day everyone sees the light.

Recently I've been dealing with a chap on the continent who used a £25 eBay clutch slave cylinder in his ZT-T - it lasted a whole 100 miles before failing again. He was considering scrapping the car he was so fed up with it! A bit of calming down later and a decent kit was sent over, and it's had no issues since.

I do like Mahle filters - I've used them before. MANN are also well known in the filter trade.

You pays your money and you takes your chance!

I liked the bit where he demonstrates the finished areas (the outside parts) in comparison the hidden parts and poor finishes of the insides.

Yes, clever marketing but he does have a lot of valid points and a nice sales unique selling point where he describes the Mann filter being only 50p more expensive per year than the cheaper alternative.

Presentation had the eyelids drooping a little but glad I managed to watch it through.
Makes it seem like a 'no-brainer' to buy a decent filter given the relatively small difference in price, the other high costs (e.g. the oil itself) in the job and the long intervals between.
But, as others have noted, how do you know which are the good quality products when superficially they look so similar?

another thing' how do you know that you are buying a quality branded oem spec part and not a fake. even some major motor spares companies have been fooled in the past.

last year did an engine flush using comma' quality diesel flushing oil, and an oil and filter change, using comma syner-z fully synthetic 5w 30 {to bmw LL-04 spec}.

the filter was a mann and on close inspection looked exactly like the filter fitted by "cleckheaton rover" during the last rover dealer service, so am happy with that.

do i skimp' well yes i do, at the moment i am just about to try out some cheap 22 inch aero wipers, make just says "high performance aero dynamic' direct fit wiper blades" cost around £5 inc p+p off ebay.

the bmw equivalent in size and style {but not likely quality} around £30.
this i am happy to do' i will carry around with me the old blades just incase of failiure or poor performance.

but skimp on vital parts such as oils, filters, fluids, brakes and tyres ect and your asking for trouble.

You will be fine with the cheap flat aero wiper blades - I've used them on my last 3 cars and they are great! You may only get a year out of them but a fiver hardly breaks the bank!

Proud to have a cheap set of flat wiper blades fitted too - seem to do the job very well!
