CDTi Engine Cooling Fan Removal

Further to my air-con woes, having carried out the ECON/Auto test and the slow speed fan is not kicking in. Have read just about every post on this site and looks like the brushes have died, have got the brushes as recommended by SD1too.

Have got the front bumper off (cleaning the headlights to vent my frustration) and now cannot find a way to get the fan unit (and its shroud etc) off the car.

Mr Haynes says I have to drain the cooling system and remove the radiator?

Is he telling porkies (please God?!)

Advice please?

I think that's the best one and its the one I followed. Looks more complicated than it actually is . . . . honest!

I had been searching under Engine Cooling Fan Removal (if I remember correctly) but none of the results gave me this info.

Just a point to note, there is no need to degas the aircon, the fan shroud can be carefully cut around the pipes to completely remove the fan and shroud. Or it can be lifted forward at one side and the three torx bolts on the back that hold the fan to the shroud can be undone by a helpful contortionist.

Okay.

It all came apart and have removed the fan motor and lo and behold one of the brushes was totally gone, and another was about half the size of the other two!

Both small brushes have now been replaced, fan motor/blades and shroud re-assembled, the lot is now initially installed back on the car and have tried Jules DEMIST test, the fan is not moving at all!

And its now pissisting down out there so have had to call it a day for the night (if you see what I mean?).

Could the fault lie in the Control Box secured inside the shroud?

Job for tomorrow, strip the shroud off again and open up the Control Box and see what's going on in there.

Will also check all continuity and power supplies in case the fault lies there.

BTW is done 118k miles so I suppose this was bound to happen soon!

Or as Dave said you can do it without either degassing or cutting the shroud.

HI Paul.
What did the commutator look like, was it scored if not did you clean it, also did you check the magnets around the commutator there are four, remove all the conduit from the from motor to the control box & from the control box to the plugs check all wires thick and the thin ones.
