Vauxhall said today they are reviewing any competitions they are involved in/with.
A very open but non committal statement. How can they continue when asking staff to take a sabbatical till October 2009? |

Vauxhall, like any other manufacturer involved in Motor Sport are not in it for 'fun'. It is a form of promotion and advertising which has been known to pay dividends in the past - Ford with the Escort for example and also with the Sierra which at first didn't sell as well as they hoped for a Cortina replacement until they used it in the BTTC, and then there's the success Subura have enjoyed selling high performance road cars on the back of their rallying success. So, at Vauxhall, it could be seen as a means to an end to increase sales - ultimately good for the workforce. Whether the workforce would see it that way sat at home watching it on the TV during shutdown is another matter of course.

Agree TF, Its a difficult one I should think with manufacturers
they need sales and this helps get them, but takes money away from other areas, and with staff laid of or on "sabatical" and asking Government for support whilst doing this may be seen poorly by some? |
