Cool Help advice please Oil Level check

Hi peeps advice please i got home tonight and noticed a tapping sound defiantly a tappet ?

Anyway i check oil and nothing on dipstick,i rechecked taking into account i have just driving 10 miles as well.Hmm strange could i be low on oil ?

I have no oil leaks anywhere and at last oil change i put in the recommended 4.7ltrs and yes my catch tank is catching vapor/oil.

I have only driven approx 4000 miles since then no oil light on.

I then added approx 3/4 ltr of oil and tappet has stopped ?

Any advice please

Well not sure about 'defiant' tappets. But for oil level check it's no good trying to check the level on a warm engine that's just been running. Leave it for 15minutes plus (maybe less) you need to let the oil around the engine run back down to the sump. Checking the level requires removal of the dipstick (and wipe it clean) and importantly wait a minute or two before slowly re-inserting it into the tube - If you don't wait or re-insert too fast then all you will do is get air pressure in the dipstick tube which pushes down the level of oil in the tube giving a false low reading. I'd strongly recommend that you re-check the level with the engine cold following the above procedure.

Of course if you already followed proper procedure and there's no sign of internal oil leak and no smoke then check the coolant for signs of oil (remember to let things cool down before removing the header tank cap).

Gary; here is the official method of checking the KV6 oil level to which Avulon refers.

Okay checked again today still no oil on dipstick. How long should dipstick be ? (im asking just in case last idiot owner has replaced it or something) mine is from under the neck to end 535mm long.

I dont want to overfill as that is just as bad.Oil light does come on then goes straight out when i start.

Hi.
On the V6 you will still get normal oil pressure with as little as 2 litres in the sump, not necessarily on hard cornering or braking though.
How much oil are you collecting in your catch tanks? If the cam cover filters are blocked you may have a bit too much back pressure building up forcing oil past rings and seals, unlikely but not entirely impossible.
My dipstick is 593mm end to end

The other possibility is how much oil was added last service? Did you change the oil yourself and how much did you put in?

When Trikey did mine last week I think he put in 5.2 litres but specifically told me to check the oil level next day for peace of mind.

Needless to say it was spot on.

Edit: just re read you thread and you say 4.7 litres. Am I wrong then in thinking mine was 5.2??

Hmm 593 i cant measure mine end to end as i have the anodised ring on it hence measured what actually goes in the tube.i check cam cover filters make sure there cleanish.not to much collecting in catcher and if i think about it when i did oil change i put in 4.7 ltrs never anymore.i just do some checking weather permitting by checking filters but like i said nothing in coolant or coming out of exhaust and no smelling of oil anywhere
Thanks..

5.2 ltrs is about what I put in mine the other week when I changed my oil & filter.
