A shed question...

So a quick question for this of you with sheds that you use for more than just storage. If you've insulated it, how have you done it?

I've got a 10'x6' shed with windows all along 1 side, that houses my model railway. It was fine, if a little hot, during the spring and summer, but now the temperature is dropping it's getting a little chilly out there. I had some rolls of foil bubblewrap type stuff left over from doing the roof and door in the garage at our last house, so I've put that on the shed roof, but I've like to do the walls as well. At the moment I'm looking at using insulation board, such as this: https://www.building-supplies-online...-x-2400mm.html

And then covering it with 3.6mm ply which I can then paint. The insulation can't be thicker than 45mm as that's the width of the shed frame, and the boards for my track is already in place.

I've managed to get the price down to £185 including delivery, but with the time of year, money is tight so I'm wondering if there's any cheaper way I've not thought of. I think I could get away with less plywood, but the place I've found has a minimum order of 5 sheets, and to get less from other places, seems to cost just as much.

I'm not expecting a lovely warm room, but something that's insulated enough to be kept heated with an oil filled radiator would be good. At the moment I have to use a fan heater to get it warmed up and within a few minutes of it turning off, the temperature has dropped and it has to come back on, and costs a fortune to run.

Times like these I wish I'd kept hold of the FBH I had so I could adapt it to heat the shed!

hi Derrick , not insulated mine yet, but was thinking of uses old quilts as when i built it i doulble skinned the walls with the intention of insulating them at a later date. i Have a halogen heater on the go at the moment but i also have an oil filled heater and a gas fire for when it gets colder, i have venting in the roof. In the summer it also gets hot in the shed so i either open the door and put a fly net up or i use the vent i have at the base of the shed which draws colder air from under the shed with help of an old fan i,ll put some pics up later for you

Be careful of unsealed double skinned walls as all sorts of animals might see them as a cosy place to set up home!

As you can see plenty of ventilation 😁 I also a gas detector and a smoke alarm fitted 😁 even though I have plenty of heating I think I would benefit from insulating the walls and roof , I have an inch and a half gap between outer wall and inner . There is quite a few videos on YouTube showing how to do it as well as explaining vapour barriers etc.

Checkout the likes of gumtree for insulation or ask guys in the trade to price it for you if you know any.

I’ve a trade account at travis Perkins if you want I can price it for you just drop me a pm with what your after.

Another option could be polystyrene sheets a lot cheaper than the likes of celotex. Polystyrene has a lower R value than celotex however after a few years the R value of celotex drops to match that of polystyrene where as polystyrene won’t drop.

Thats quite some shed there Elroy! I'm limited with space as it is, so any insulation has to fit inside the 45mm framework, and even then in certain places I'm going to have to go thinner as it'll take up too much space going to the edge of the frame. I think I've got a halogen heater somewhere, but 2 of the 3 bulbs blew within a couple of months, so it's sat at the back of the garage since, I also found it to be too bright in a small space.

Wullie, unfortunately I don't know any builders, not any more, the only one I knew retired a year or 2 ago so no longer has his trade accounts, or van to collect things. I had a look at travis perkins, and for what I want, the trade discount would need to be around 50% for it to be competitive against what I've found online.

I did look at polystyrene sheets, but last time I tried using them the mess was awful, I was cleaning it up for months!

Steve, don't, someone a few houses away found a massive snake in their shed a few months ago, then a few days later a python was found in the road just around the corner from me. I've been terrified to look under the boards in my shed ever since. No avoiding it soon though, got to re wire the railway...

have you looked at something like wool floss, its the kind of stuff they use in ponds , that comes in different thicknesses and a lot less mess than the polystyrene
