Clutch Replacement - What would be cheaper?
Knowing that at some point in the (hopefully) distant future my clutch will need replacing, can anybody tell me what the cheapest way around it would be?
For example, if I buy something like this: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/bud...1069-uub105301 And get it fitted professionally, would it be a cheaper option than just asking them to both supply as well as fit?

I'd recommend buying the kit yourself and finding a garage or mechanic that will fit it for you using the parts you supply, because if they source the parts they'll just source the cheapest and you'll be left with no clutch after a week. unless they can order a borg and beck clutch kit for you.

One thing to consider when thinking "cheapest" is, what happens if something goes wrong. If the garage supply and fit, then they have an obligation to resolve free of charge assuming it is a fitting error, or defective parts (so not user abuse).
If you supply the parts, you could end up in the middle of a disagreement about who pays to rectify if there is a problem (imagine both parties claiming the other one should pay) Ring around, you don't always save that much money anyway....

...or You could state your preference to your garage of choice and ask them to order the specified parts for you. Always worth asking.

David.
You are only about 5.5 miles from a clutch place which I have taken all my cars the Tourer, MGZT and FL1 in the last 4 years, Walsall based 2yrs warranty or 18,000 miles which ever comes first. He always uses LUK and the proper oil for topping up gearbox, as above if you purchase the clutch your self then have the work carried out by a garage even the one i use they would not guarantee the parts only the work, so safe to say always let the garage supply the parts even if you have to point them in the direction of what you want fitted. Drop me PM if you would like the place above or when you may need it, hopefully not in the near future.

I use an independant, have done for years, he's a friend. I'm finding he's cheaper than everyone. I always supply the parts and he quotes for the labour I do find it's best to use someone you know and trust, failing that, someone who is highly recommended like Steve suggests.

Cheapest on day-one is unlikely to prove lowest cost option in the long term.
The only opions I would consider are: 1. Use a known expert (individual or garage) to supply and fit parts. 2. Buy good quality parts (for me, that means LuK) and get a known/trusted individual or garage to fit. |
