Default Battery drain problem advice please

Hi, not my car but my father-in -Laws car, here is how he describes the problem, any ideas ??

2005 Rover 75. Cdti. Has a new good quality Heavy Duty Battery; and a new Bosch Alternator. Charging checked, all correct.
If car left for,say a week, then will not turn over and start, have known as little as three days, for the same result. A meter check showed a drain of 18 Amps, after boost started, then engine switched off. Left on charge over night, started on battery, switched off, then retested. This showed a drain of 1.4 amps. This appears to be an intermittent problem.

Thanks V

If you look for these problems, it is good if you can catch it with a high consumption. Then remove fuses systematically, and find out in which circuit the heavy drain mainly takes place.

This is a instance where a helper is a good idea.

Does this car have a built in sat nav? That could be causign a battery drain by not shutting down properly.

Sorry, due to a big change in home circumstances, I am unable to do any large jobs at present, but can still offer evening time diagnostics.

If Highline Sat Nav is fitted might be worth checking the sat nav disc drive is shutting down correctly. This was a problem I had with my ZTT a while ago which was causing a drain on the battery.

Does it have a Fuel Burning Heater?, I had a similar issue on my 2002 CDT, I unplugged the FBH and bingo no battery drain issues. Worth a look at though.

I had the same problem when the car was left standing for any length of time. I bought a solar charger off eBay for about £15. Not had a problem since, even in the very cold weather .

Faulty CD multichanger in the boot was the cause of my battery drain. As mentioned pull the fuses one at a time until you find the drain.

As a quick check, see if the LSM backlighting remains illuminated when the car is locked up

Seen this on more than a few occasions now, and it prevents the BCU from entering sleep mode

The cure is going to be a replacement light switch module.
If you just fit a 2nd hand one then the chances are your dash will put a warning up on the trip counter to show there is a mileage mismatch.
There are a number of members on here who will be able to code you a replacement light switch up, Brian and myself amongst them.
Regards
Chris
