Default IPK display

Hi,
I have long been following the IPK screen issues, and have been wondering what makes these screens so expensive & fragile. From my understanding it is simply the ribbon cable that is fragile, but as this ribbon contains a chip it is not a simple fix, however this has got me thinking, if a chip could be coded to translate from whatever the IPK send to the screen in to something an alternative screen could display, then we could possibly have a more resilient fix, rather than replacing like with like. I know it is a surface mount ribbon connector on the IPK, so may not be really easy to get to these signals.
However the question I have is, does anybody have knowledge of what the IPK interface is, both in terms of pinout and in terms of data format. Asking before I start looking in detail as I don't want to duplicate anybody else's work.

Thanks
Chris
