Default How do you use a clutch alignment tool?

For those that know this must seem daft but how on earth do you use a clutch alignment tool?

I bought this one https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/t...70301&0&t5_409

but I don't know how to use it. I've done a search on Youtube and not found anything useful.

Can you tell me how to use it?

thank you

I have never used one like that but would assume you place the clutch plate , flywheel face down on the(clean ) bench, place the clutch cover over it, engage the spline of the tool in the spline of the plate and expand it to grip, then screw the cone down hard which centres it on the fingers of the cover. I assume the other two plain shafts are used if the spline doesn't fit your plate. It is then picked up as an assembly (Cover and Plate), bolted to the flywheel and the tool removed by disengaging the cone and spline . Personally I have my reservations as one, if my assumptions are right, is centring the plate to the cover , not the flywheel , which adds a little more error to the assembly.

A clutch alignment tool is designed to center the friction plate behind the pressure plate, so that the input shaft from the gearbox will align upon assembly of box and engine.
You bolt the pressure plate on loosely, so the friction plate can move, insert the alignment tool, make sure all aligns! and bolt the pressure plate on, torquing as required. Remove tool, fit gearbox to engine.

The tool is largely superfluous, normally a broom handle will suffice.

Yes that's how it works, however by aligning the driven plate to the machined edge of the pressure plate, the clutch will be perfectly aligned

It works just as you describe though

MGR must have thought it a good idea, as this picture is the factory tool at work

Hi Mike,
As above is the way to use it.
But if you need a hand, give me a shout and I will pop over and give you a hand

that's very kind of you I may just do that. Mike Noc has also said he is willing to pop over.

My big concern is fitting bell housing to engine. It was a fight to get it off and I really think I will be twice as hard to get it back on so thank you.

Just check the plate slides on the gearbox splines before you bolt the cover and plate to the flywheel.

Lol, the PG1 clutch I got from Best of British had 23 splines rather than 24, and that's the replacement in the picture

I never did get a refund even after sending it back
