V6 auxilary belt replacement
Hello greetings from a very warm new Zealand.
I am in the process of replacing the auxiliary belt on our 2.5 V6 with 270,000 kms on the clock. The idler bearing had seized causing the belt to overheat, shredding itself to pieces and damaging the pulley on the tensioner. The work involved for what should be a simple maintenance job is horrendous. Easy if the engine is removed. Sounds a simple job according to the Haynes manual, yeh right! I have ordered the various parts (including the tensioner and idler) which are due to arrive from the UK shortly. Looking at the tensioner it is only the removable pulley wheel which needs replacing rather than having to buy the whole assembly. However, it would appear that you cannot buy it on its own. I cannot find a "how to" on the forum. Any suggestions from the experts would be appreciated.

From the Rover service manual:
Ancillary drive belt - KV6 1. Disconnect battery earth lead. 2. Remove RH wheel arch liner. 3. Support engine on jack. CAUTION: To prevent damage to components, cushion the jack pad with a block of wood or hard rubber. 4. Remove 2 bolts securing engine RH mounting stay, release earth lead and remove stay. 5. Remove 2 bolts securing ancillary drive belt cover to top arm mounting bracket and remove cover. 6. Remove 2 bolts securing steady bracket to RH body mounting, loosen bolt securing steady bracket to engine top arm bracket. 7. Remove nut and 4 bolts securing engine top arm bracket to RH engine mounting and to engine front plate. Remove top arm bracket and steady bracket as an assembly. 8. Remove 4 bolts securing engine mounting bracket to engine front plate. 9. Remove bracket. 10. Using a 3/8" square drive socket bar, raise drive belt tensioner and release drive belt from alternator pulley. 11. Release and remove drive belt from remaining pulleys. Refit 1. Clean pulley 'V's and tensioner pulley running surface. 2. Fit new drive belt to crankshaft pulley. 3. Raise belt tensioner and connect drive belt to steering pump, alternator and compressor pulleys. Ensure drive belt is correctly located in pulley grooves. 4. Position engine mounting bracket to engine front plate, fit bolts and tighten to 45 Nm. 5. Position top arm bracket assembly to engine front plate and RH engine mounting, fit bolts and tighten to 100 Nm, fit nut and tighten to 85 Nm. 6. Position steady bracket to RH body mounting, fit and tighten bolts to 85 Nm. 7. Position ancillary drive belt cover, fit bolts and tighten to 25 Nm. 8. Position stay and earth lead, fit bolts and tighten to 25 Nm. 9. Remove jack. 10. Fit RH wheel arch liner. 11. Connect battery earth lead. |

Ancillary belt
