Parts arrived for the neighbours 75 spring replacement so started by removing the lower strut bolt, or not... A few whacks with a hammer after covering everything with plus gas yesterday. Absolutely solid with no movement whatsoever. Won’t tighten or loosen with a SnapOn power bar or battery gun. On the verge of rounding the bolt off so left it for another day as I’m quite short of breath today..... possibly need to look for a better quality socket as my 15mm deep six sided socket isn’t an impact socket and possibly try and think of a way of getting some heat from somewhere. Why do things never go well when you want them too?

Then there were two...
Today, I did the other rear caliper, it's a nice feeling to see old become new again. I first dipped the caliper in the acid bath, then a good wire brushing with some detergent, then a good rinse and in the plating bath for a 30 minute plate. I think they make a lovely couple!
I also put two bolts in an old subframe, it's to give a rough idea of what I'm aiming for when everything is new and shiny like the bolts. I'm really enjoying the relaxing feeling it gives when that passivate goes on at the end. |

Dug the ZT-T out from the back of the drive, jacked it up an secured the loose heat shield, checked and corrected the tyre pressures, replaced the blown brake light bulb and fitted the new wheelarch liner inspection door fixing. Washed dryed the car in readiness for claying and polishing the bodywork, took it for a quick drive and parked it back up. The wife arrived home and informed me that her XK8 washers don't work - found fuse 7 in drivers side fuse box is blown, and instantly blows when a new fuse is fitted. Put the car cleaning gear away, just got to find the Jaguar electrical fault first, may take some time!

Today...and yesterday I have retrofitted cruise control as per the brilliant guide on this forum. I just need plug for steering wheel interface...well two pins for it to make it work. Also got a single button finisher on order from rimmer bros...back order though.

Well today my curiosity got the better of me. I had to check that the rear spring that was fitted last week by what might become my chosen mechanic , was fitted ok. Sorry, but I like to know if a job has been done correctly. Pleased to say it was perfect on all points. Drainage holes in isolator are in the correct place and fitted in the upper arm ok. So... I decided to have the rear wheels off so I could do a bit more waxoyling and fumbling around. Cleaned all the dry mud from the back of the wheelarch covers at the front of the rear wheelarch, and then plastered Waxoyle on the metal, and put them back into place. Lightly used my drill with a wire brush to get the light rust off the brake disc’s .Also off the rear drum’s, and painted them silver along with the calliper’s Day well spent ..

The steering wheel controls haven't worked for some time in Frosty, so today was the day to sort that out.
First of all I removed the airbag and the radio, flashed up the multimeter, then it became obvious that the rotary coupler was the culprit, only one of the two cables had continuity from the socket on the coupler back to the radio. No new rotary coupler, however Frosty is an 1800, and as a result no cruise control fitted, so I relocated the contact in the plug on both the steering wheel wiring plug, and the output plug of the coupler to utilise a unbroken connection in the coupler. Hurray !!, the steering wheel controls are now operational on the CR-80 , buoyed by this success, I then turned my attention to the damaged badge on the airbag, where an inept MOT tester had used it as a "horn button" several years ago So out with the drill, and the pop rivets were soon history, the airbag was in parts, and the badge removed. I then very carefully rolled the dents out of the badge, then refitted it to the airbag casing, followed by the airbag itself, and the pop rivets replaced. Next was the installation of the Kenwood infra red interface in readiness for the new radio, but before that could happen, I needed a Kenwood single din fascia. A quick trip to a local MGR garage and specialist breaker saw the acquisition of the fascia, but at a price, as I got involved in replacing a pair of 75 Tourer brake backplates. Back home, radio plugged in, and tested, nope SWC not working, so I replaced the new Kenwood KDC-3057U with the KRC-394 I'd removed from the ZT, and the interface was proven to be working It looks not bad, in fact better then the unit I fitted to the ZT, but it's a little disappointing that the SWC don't work. More investigation tomorrow, methinks Brian |
