Wheel Bolts
Hi All,
Earlier this year I made a purchase on eBay thinking I was buying some nice shiny red wheel bolts but I mistakenly read the advert wrong and bought some wheel nuts Not really wanting to waste them (the colour will look great with my wheels lol ) I would like to go from wheel bolts to wheel nuts so whilst I am on a ship I might as well get some studded bar and cut 20 lengths....please could somebody advise me what size studding will fit the bolt holes in our wheel hubs and the length of each studding required (I.e the thread length and diameter of a standard bolt).

Wheel studs are taper fitted in a splined hole, you can't just stick a length of threaded rod in as there's nothing to stop it winding out

EDIT: It can be done fitting permanent studding in hubs and having nuts instead without it unwinding as oppose to using bolts. The studding needs to be fitted using locktite (or similar) with the car off the ground and left to cure/set for a day or so without any weight on before refitting the wheels and putting it back on the ground. A lot of folk convert to wheel nuts for quick wheel changes who are into track days etc....me, I just want to do it for a more aesthetic appearance to have nice wheel nuts lol. EDIT EDIT: The photo in your second post has just appeared, now I know what you meant in how the end is permanently attached to the hub so the bolts pop through, I wonder if it's possible to buy replacement hubs for our cars with the bolts already attached, something for me to look into.

Sorry, you can't use studding.
It's made of silver coloured cheese. You need high tensile steel for wheel studs and it's probably a good idea to heat treat it as well to give it a better chance of surviving our roads. Mick |

Not having a go at you as you are giving advice but too many folk just reply things can't be done or what's needed and don't bother answering the original query....I didn't need to know standard material studding or steel wouldn't be sufficient so didn't ask what I should use to make hub bolts (or whatever they are called) all I asked for were the dimensions of standard bolts so I could use them....

Thank you so much for that, I don't suppose you know the actual thread length also?
