Default Engine light warning!

Hi, had a problem today with my rover 75 2.5 v6
i believe when i put water in the other day i didnt put the water cap back on properly, i was driving it today and as i was coming back home water was coming out from the reservoir, left the car to cool down, added water and coolant back in, no sign of any leaks, but when i start the engine now i still have the engine warning light that is steady.
i have disconnected the battery and reconnected and the light is still there, car seems to be driving normally when drove round the block, there is no white smoke coming from the exhaust, also tested reservoir and colour is normal, and light is still on can anyone give me any advice on what it could be

Just driven to tesco & back and light has now gone off, could it be a possibility that the cap wasnt on properly and the water and coolant had leaked out an the car is warning me about this ?
