There should have been a 'P 'code ask him what it was. if you have a 2004 you have a PRT kit fitted thermo is in the front not at the back like a normal k series.

Ok bud. I'll ask him tomorrow. Don't mean to sound stupid, but what's a PRT kit?

Its a pressure release themostat. it is located in the front just after the bottom outlet of the radiator number 17 on this. It is a sealed unit.

The guy that sold the car is conveniently away for the week. My mechanic said there's about 1/2 an inch play in the turbo shaft, and he can send it to Eastlake engines in Essex to be refurb'd for about £500. Does that seem about right??

sounds a bit steep to me , i bought a brand new one for less than £400 give them a call 0844 980 8780 (turbo active)
the part was listed as 765472-1N and is the replacment for a 731320 came brand new in sealed box this was last year so price might have chaned but give them a call and see as said though when the turbo shaft went on mine there was masses of smoke and steam out the back another good pratice is to when changing or reconing your turbo buy new a oil feed pipe and drain pipe, and id advise the oil feed pipe bolt too as this snapped on mine upon removal
