Aircon Evaporator Clean
Can anyone please advise me on the correct way to disinfect the aircon evaporator?
I have had two goes once last year using a Wurth brand product I followed advice and using the extension tube sprayed up the drain tubes albeit I couldn't get the tube past the point where the drain tube goes thru he body. Consequently most of the disinfectant poured back out and was a waste. My local aircon specialist said I should remove the pollen filter and spray in thru the intake. I did this today but the flap only opens with the fan running so did this on auto, econ and recirculate, the fan blade spinning restricts things a bit so I also switched off and pushed the tube down thru the closed flap and sprayed. I also sprayed into the drain tubes with same results as before. I left the fan running for a while to hopefully circulate and dry out the cleaner but I am not convinced I have done the job correctly. I was sort of expecting to see some cleaning fluid run out thru the drain if it had got to the evaporator. At the moment the smell is not noticeable but it does go after the aircon has run for a while anyway. Just wondered how others have tackled the job and with what success. Cheers Tony

I just removed the pollen filter, and sprayed for a round ten seconds at a time, with 20 seconds between each burst. Total time around three minutes. That was about nine months ago. Going to do it again shortly because it is beginning to wiff a bit again.

There is only one way to do this properly.
As follows:- 1) Buy some of the white foamy A/C Bactericide from Rimmers. 2) Remove Passenger side plastic under glovebox. 3) Lean in and you will see the fan through the recirc vent flap. 4) Turn on A/C on re-circ for a 20 secs, then spray liberally into the vent, looking with a torch so you DO NOT insert the spray nozzle into the fan blades. 5) Turn off fans and A/C after about ~10secs. 6) Wait 30mins, run fans on full blast. 7) Repeat Process again - then wait another 30 mins. Leave overnight, then blast it again full speed in the morning for a few mins to cear out any fumes. Voila, last time I did this which is not exactly really different to the standard instructions, I never had another A/C smell ever again. Job done. Anything else is a waste of time and will not coat the matrix properly. Removing pollen filters, or using the "A/C bombs" is again, a complete waste of time. Do it once, do it right, and relax. Another thing to do that helps is to crank the heat up - especially in this weather and run the A/C on hot for as long as possible.
This cooks/kills off the bacteria and fungi - uncomfortable of course in hot weather but it does work. If you only use the system to cool - then the bugs can thrive. Heat kills them |

I have used this a couple of times on customers cars and have been very impressed with the result
https://www.bilthamber.com/air-con-bomb-citrus You put the cannister in the footwell and press the button, you leave the car idling with the A/C on and on recirculate with the windows shut. After a few mins it stops and you leave the car shut. I leave it a couple of hours before I open the car. Not cheap but you pay for what you get. |
