They come pre-filled ; would the clutch fluid serve this purpose ? My existing one has done 16+ years immersed in clutch fluid and not failed yet

Just out of interest if you have to change the pipe work you would surely lose the pre filled part so would also have to get rid of the diaphragm fitted in the top of the cylinder or at least cut the bottom out of it,but still sounds a good deal!

seems like this is an item to buy and keep to one side.

can the original cylinders fitted to our cars be re-sealed?

You can refill the system, bleed it up and then replace the diaphragm as if it hasn't been touched - it's not glued in, just sits loosely on top of the reservoir and held down and sealed with the cap.
It'd be as if it'd never been touched once any air had been flushed through.

If fitting a pre-filled new item, I'd always recommend flushing at least 250ml of clean, new fluid through - so the pre-filled bit would be irrelevant then anyway.
One of the main causes of Slave Cylinder (and Master for that matter) is thought to be rubber particles suspended in the fluid - so it's always a good idea to flush the system when anything is changed.

I tried some time ago to find seals that fitted - I actually made a prototype of a re-sealed unit, using some Triumph brake Master Cylinder seals and a hex-head bolt (and some drilling) to keep it all held together.
It worked very well, and I sold the unit to someone on here for the cost of postage - I wonder if it's still going?

It was a right pain to fit the seals and take the unit apart though, and a problem with the units that has been raised is that the plastic bore of the Master Cylinder is often badly scored when they're taken apart, meaning new seals would likely fail in short order if it wasn't cleaned up (which isn't easy with plastic!)

Thanks for the feedback chaps - looks like this is a go-er then, I'll make my interest known and start working the price down.

With regards to rubber degradation, I don't believe this will be an issue as I took an original, just-failed unit apart about a month ago from a 2001 car - the seals were in perfect order with no swelling, it was actually a small valve within the Master Cylinder that'd failed.

Your shout
Having worked in engineering for over 40 years for some of the largest companies ie Rolls Royce ,Caterpillar,Perkins and also a lot for both British and U.S armed forces .It seems that their precautions for this matter is totally uneccessary.

I'm not saying that it's unnecessary, just that there's a lot of still-working Master Cylinders out there that are older, and have had a more difficult life than sitting on a shelf - so if there's any degradation, it shouldn't affect reliability too adversely.

Of course we'll fully warrant the units anyway, so in the event of an issue no-one will be left out of pocket.

If every one we sell goes 'pop' straight away, I'll of course come back to eat my words - but I believe that to be quite unlikely.

Thanks everyone for your input - we've got these on the way, and available to order here:

https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/gen...5480-stc000110

Unfortunately due to the cost of bringing them in, we've had to price them at £49.99 - however this is still a significant saving on all other current options.
