Which tyres to fit where ????
Winter is approaching, the Zed needs two front tyres now and rears in about 6 to 8 months I'd guess.
I have a daily 12 mile each way commute to work with some moderate hills and downward slopes that can cause problems in snow and icy conditions. As front line NHS I need to get to work if at all possible. A set of winter tyred wheels is really not a viable option for the amount of time I'd really need them, and for the expense involved in buying 4 specialised 18inch tyres and a set of alloy rims. I've decided to give cross climates a go. As I'm going to fit 2 now and two more when my current rears reach 2mm should I put the new cross climates on the front (drive) or the rear wheels. Also opinions on cross climates ???? Thanks.

i have never had any cross climate tyres so can not give an opinion on them, but regards new tyres they should always go on the rear if you are not changing all 4 at the same time.

In time gone past I would have put them on the front, the traction wheels on a front wheel drive car but this seems to be wrong and as Arctic says, new tyres to the rear.

You will get a load of different answers from the major tyre chains (pardon the unintended pun), like National Tyre/Kwik fit etc. Use an independent specialist (I am lucky to have one in the village), and you will get expert and correct advice .

Michelin Cross Climates are a good choice, they make a very acceptable compromise as this type of tyre are always compromised to a certain extent.

I always stick on the front. Firstly, they are the ones that should take me where I want to go and secondly they provide the traction. Should I be daft enough to lose the car on a slippery road, it is much quicker and easier to control a rear wheel skid. Interestingly, When I was in the USA a couple of years back, they recommended new on the front of my daughters car. I would like to see stats that prove either way is better.

I've been fitting winter tyres for years. They make a difference on cold days, icy roads and snow.
My first 75 had all 4 fitted and was able to leave our cul de sac with ease whereas next doors BMW X5 could not! He had 4 spinning wheels due to having 4 very fat tyres designed for speed and handling rather than traction. My wife's BMW has all 4 changed as its rear wheel drive. Spare set of alloys in the shed. The Peugeot 308 has the front only changed for winter. I've not yet decided about the ZT. Will probably leave it alone as we will have 2 cars ready for winter. The ZT would only have the front 2 changed as that is where both traction and steering are applied. You will upset the neighbours when they see you pulling away in deep snow when they can't.
